My Weight Loss Journey

Many of you have had a front row seat watching me battle a number of obstacles in an effort to lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle. I walk from National Harbor across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Washington, DC to Old Town Alexandria and back. I cycle around the Nation’s Capital, I purchase and eat organic and other healthy foods and yet I “yo-yo” back and forth on the scale. Why is this? Well there are a number of reasons:
- I tend to be an emotional eater who eats when stressed. Guilty!
- Then there’s the issue of insufficient rest. Guilty! (Experts say getting a full 8 hours of rest is critical to losing weight).
- How about eating late at night. Guilty! (Many experts say you should not eat after dinner).
- And then there’s the issue of portion control. Guilty! (I tend to put too much food on my plate. Now I eat off of a smaller plate).
You see, I’m what’s known as a “Foodie.” The Merriman-Webster dictionary defines a foodie as someone who has an avid interest in food and the latest food fads. The Urban Dictionary defines a foodie as a politically correct term for a fat person.
I found myself at a crossroad. A foot injury on New Year’s Day slowed me down. I was not able to exercise for 90 days and my weight started creeping upward to well over 300 lbs. Just like that, I went from being on the right path to weight loss to being obese. I realized that if I wanted to see results I had to heal from the foot injury and do something different.
Armed with a new Nike Fitbit, I am trying to get over the hump of “flat-lining” because no matter what I do, I have not lost any weight over the past two weeks. I even bought a food scale to weigh my food. That’s helped, but I think I have to get more serious and vary my exercise and reduce my food intake if I want to slim down.
The best move I made toward healthier living was join the ID Life Movement. The challenge for me now is to continue with the program, deal with the setbacks and stay the course.
