SYLVIA TRAYMORE MORRISON

When’s the last time you saw Wendy Williams, Diana Ross, Mo’Nique, Whoopi Goldberg, Fantasia, Melania Trump, Eryka Badu and First Lady Michelle Obama in one evening’s performance? Well, all you need to do is catch the Sylvia Traymore Morrison Show the next time she’s in town. Originally from Washington, DC, Sylvia is the first African American Female Impressionist in the country. One of the first solo artists to tour and open for Whitney Houston in over 20 major U.S. cities, Morrison’s career in Hollywood is legendary, even if not well known.  The iconic Redd Fox recognized her talent early on and signed her to her first management deal.

In his new book, Harold Bell writes that he met Muhammad Ali in 1967 on the campus of Howard University.  It was a time in Ali’s life when he was being ostracized by many for refusing to be inducted into the U. S. Army because of his religious beliefs.  After his inspiring talk with hundreds of students who cheered his every word, Ali asked for someone to take him on a walking tour of DC.  Harold Bell stepped forward and volunteered to lead the tour.  The rest is sports and community history.

In 1972, Harold Bell became the first black in Washington, DC to host and produce his own radio sports talk show “The Original Inside Sports.”  In 1975, Bell was the first black person to host and produce his own TV special in prime time on NBC affiliate WRC-TV 4, with his special guest Muhammad Ali.

I remember the lead up to the “Rumble In The Jungle.”  No one gave Muhammad Ali a chance to beat Big George Foreman.  Foreman had destroyed everyone in his path including a pounding of “Smokin’ Joe Frazier.  I can still hear the call of legendary ABC TV sportscaster Howard Cosell yelling, “Down goes Frazier!  Down goes Frazier!”  For the first time in my life, I was afraid for Ali.  I didn’t publicly go against Ali, but I feared for his life when he entered the ring against George Foreman.  Boy, was I wrong!  Ali made history that day.

In 1974, Muhammad Ali flew Harold and his cameraman/producer and Rodney Brown to Chicago to discuss a proposed television special.  Ali would be Harold’s special guest.  Harold recalled, “We had breakfast and arrived at hotel around 7:00 am and I called Ali’s room and he answered the phone.  The rest is sports media history.”

Come out to the Miracle Theater to see the rest of the story.
