Some Rules Aren’t Written Down. They’re Learned by Living.

“What is a Grown Man Rule?” A Grown Man Rule is a practical principle about navigating adult life. It might concern:

  • Money
  • Marriage and relationships
  • Fatherhood
  • Friendship
  • Work and career
  • Health
  • Character
  • Integrity
  • Conflict
  • Leadership
  • Aging
  • Sex and intimacy
  • Personal safety
  • Race and culture
  • Community
  • Grief and loss
  • Technology
  • Social media
  • Masculinity
  • Asking for help
  • Knowing when to leave
  • Knowing when to stay
  • Knowing when to speak
  • Knowing when to remain silent
  • Legacy

Some rules will be serious. Some will be funny. Some will be controversial. And some may cause two grown men sitting beside each other to say: “I completely disagree with you.”

That disagreement is part of the project.

There is no instruction manual for becoming a grown man. Most of us learn along the way—from our fathers and mothers, mentors and friends, successes and failures, good decisions, bad decisions, relationships, responsibilities, and sometimes the consequences of getting it completely wrong.

The Grown Man Rulebook is about capturing those lessons and putting them into words. This page will fulfill that purpose until a dedicated website is built.

Created by Gary Johnson Media and presented in association with Black Men In America.com, The Grown Man Rulebook is a multimedia conversation about the practical rules, values, choices, habits, and life lessons that help men navigate adulthood.

This isn’t about pretending that one generation has all the answers. And it isn’t about telling every man how he should live.

It’s about asking better questions.

  • What should a grown man know about money?
  • What does responsibility really look like?
  • How should a man handle relationships, marriage, fatherhood, friendship, health, work, conflict, failure and success?
  • When should you speak up—and when should you simply walk away?
  • What lessons did it take you 30, 40, 50 or 60 years to learn that a younger man shouldn’t have to learn the hard way?

Those are Grown Man Rules.

Where Conversation Becomes Wisdom

The Grown Man Rulebook grew out of the conversations that have become a hallmark of The Thought Brothers—men with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives sitting down together and talking honestly about life.

Sometimes we’ll agree. Sometimes we won’t. That’s part of the point.

The goal isn’t to manufacture agreement. The goal is to listen, challenge our assumptions, laugh at ourselves, learn from one another and occasionally walk away saying, “That’s a Grown Man Rule.”

The Rulebook will also extend beyond The Thought Brothers. We will invite men—and women—of different ages, professions, communities and life experiences into the conversation because wisdom doesn’t belong to any one group.

You Get $100. Build Your Life.

One of the interactive features of The Grown Man Rulebook is our “Build Your Life for $100” challenge. You’re given $100 and a menu of things many people want in life—but you can’t afford everything.

  • Perfect health? There’s a price.
  • Financial security? There’s a price.
  • A great relationship? There’s a price.
  • Travel? Retirement? Longevity? A second chance?

You have to choose. But the real conversation isn’t about the imaginary $100. It’s about why you made the choices you made.

Those decisions reveal what we value, what we’ve learned, what we regret and what matters to us now. That’s where the Rulebook begins.

Help Us Write the Rulebook

The Grown Man Rulebook isn’t supposed to be written by one man.

We want to hear from you. What is one rule you believe every grown man should know?

Maybe your rule came from your father or grandfather. Maybe you learned it from your mother. Maybe a mentor taught you. Maybe life taught you—and charged you a very expensive tuition.

Send us your ruleTell us the story behind it. The best rules are usually simple:

  • Keep your word.
  • Take care of your health before your health forces you to.
  • Don’t spend money trying to impress people.
  • Know when to leave.
  • Apologize when you’re wrong.
  • Handle your responsibilities.
  • Choose your friends carefully.
  • Don’t confuse getting older with growing up.

Over time, these conversations, stories and lessons will help build something larger—a living collection of practical wisdom that can be shared across generations.

Because being a grown man isn’t determined by the number of birthdays you’ve celebrated. It’s reflected in how you live, how you treat people, how you handle responsibility, what you do when nobody is watching—and what you’ve learned along the way.

Welcome to The Grown Man Rulebook.

The rules aren’t written in stone. They’re written by experience.
