The idea for Black Men In America.com was born in October 1995 during a flight from Las Vegas to Washington, D.C., on the day of the historic Million Man March.
Inspired by the significance of that moment, founder Gary A. Johnson began envisioning the Internet as a powerful platform for education, dialogue, and community building. Long before social media transformed how people communicate, he recognized that the emerging digital landscape could give individuals and communities the opportunity to tell their own stories, share their own perspectives, and engage in conversations that might otherwise go unheard.
Over the next six years, that vision gradually took shape. In January 2001, Black Men In America.com officially launched with a mission to inform, inspire, and amplify stories that mattered to Black men and the communities they serve.
What began as a niche news website has since evolved into an award-recognized multimedia platform featuring journalism, commentary, podcasts, documentaries, interviews, and community-driven storytelling. Today, Black Men In America.com reaches readers in more than 90 countries and continues to expand its impact through partnerships with educators, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders.
Although the platform has grown significantly, its purpose remains unchanged: to tell meaningful stories, preserve important history, encourage thoughtful dialogue, and inspire positive action.
We believe the most powerful stories are often found in everyday people living lives of extraordinary purpose. By sharing those stories, we hope to inform today’s readers while leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
