Every quarter, I have the pleasure of writing for the fantastic online magazine Black Men in America. In a previous article, I highlighted my company, A Dante Production, but today, I want to share my experience from an unforgettable evening — the 2025 Motown & Mo event.
This was my first time attending, and let me tell you — I’m already ready to buy my ticket for 2026! From start to finish, the show was outstanding. As someone who produces concerts, I tend to watch every detail closely — lighting, transitions, sound, choreography, and flow. What I witnessed that night was an impressive and well-executed production.
At first, I assumed a choreographer had arranged all the dance routines, but to my surprise, I learned that each performer or group created their own. Every dancer was perfectly in sync, every act was polished, and the music selection was spot on — a true tribute to the Motown legacy.
The City Lites, Inc. program book was another highlight. I read it cover to cover and was struck by how comprehensive and thoughtfully curated it was. It reflected the dedication and attention to detail of the entire production staff. They clearly thought of everything, and it showed.
Now, let’s talk about the emcee — Donna Gray-Banks. Donna has truly become the go-to emcee for North Central Florida. Every production faces the occasional behind-the-scenes glitch, but a skilled emcee ensures the audience never notices. Donna does this masterfully, using humor, charm, and audience engagement to keep the show flowing seamlessly. Her timing is impeccable — that’s what separates a good emcee from a great one.
For me, the evening was pure joy — tapping my feet, reminiscing about the classic sounds of Motown, and appreciating the artistry on display. It was a night filled with music, nostalgia, and community.
Count me in for next year.
