FLIP WILSON 

Jersey City-born

The legacy continues with Clerow Wilson, Jr. who made a name for himself as ‘TV’s first black superstar’ for hosting the wildly successful network variety show of the 1970s, “The Flip Wilson Show.”  The Emmy and Grammy award winning actor and comedian who hailed from Jersey City, gained the loyalty of viewers who revered his recurring comical characters including Reverend Leroy of the Church of What’s Happening Now, and the sassy Geraldine Jones, who Flip portrayed in drag.  Geraldine’s  trademark quips, ‘The devil made me do it,’ and ‘What you see is what you get,’ became a huge part of the American lexicon for decades.
