No matter what age a beloved friend or someone you feel close to passes away, it can sometimes leave you shocked and heartbroken. But many emotions and feelings are heightened when they’re gone at a young age. Several well-known Black entertainers died in their 50s after battling serious health conditions that disproportionately affect Black men.
From heart disease and diabetes to kidney failure and stroke, understanding the warning signs could mean the difference between life and death.

1. DMX
Heart Attack Following Years of Health Challenges
DMX was just 50 years old when he died on April 9, 2021.
The legendary rapper suffered a heart attack that led to a catastrophic lack of oxygen to his brain. While reports indicated substance use played a role, experts note that heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death among Black men.
Symptoms Black Men Should Never Ignore:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Pain in the arms, neck, jaw, or back
- Excessive fatigue
- Dizziness or fainting
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
The Bigger Issue
Black men are more likely to develop high blood pressure at younger ages than other racial groups. Uncontrolled hypertension significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.

2. Black Rob
Kidney Failure and Multiple Health Complications
Rapper Black Rob died in 2021 at age 52.
The former Bad Boy Records artist had suffered several strokes, diabetes-related complications, and kidney failure in the years leading up to his death. In emotional videos shared before his passing, he spoke openly about his declining health.
Warning Signs of Kidney Disease:
- Swollen feet, ankles, or hands
- Frequent urination
- Foamy urine
- Fatigue
- Persistent itching
- Difficulty concentrating
- High blood pressure
Why Black Men Are at Greater Risk
Black Americans are nearly four times more likely to experience kidney failure than White Americans, largely because of higher rates of diabetes and hypertension.

3. Heavy D
A Silent Heart Condition
Legendary rapper, Heavy D died suddenly in 2011 at age 44, but his story remains relevant because many Black men face similar risks during their 40s and 50s.
An autopsy revealed that the rapper and actor suffered from a pulmonary embolism—a blood clot that traveled to his lungs.
Symptoms of a Blood Clot or Pulmonary Embolism:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Sharp chest pain
- Rapid heartbeat
- Coughing up blood
- Leg swelling or pain
Blood clots often develop without obvious symptoms until they become life-threatening.

4. Tommy Ford
An Aneurysm That Turned Fatal
Best known as Tommy Strawn on the hit TV show Martin, Tommy Ford died at age 52 after suffering a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. An aneurysm occurs when a weakened blood vessel bulges and eventually bursts.
Symptoms of an Abdominal Aneurysm:
- Deep abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Pulsating sensation in the stomach
- Sudden severe pain
- Loss of consciousness
Many aneurysms produce no symptoms until they become emergencies.

5. Michael K. Williams
The Importance of Mental and Physical Health
Michael K. Williams, known for his iconic role in The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, died at age 54. Although his death was related to an accidental drug overdose, Williams had been candid about struggles with depression, trauma, and addiction.
Mental Health Warning Signs:
- Persistent sadness
- Loss of interest in favorite activities
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Substance misuse
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Social withdrawal
Mental health conditions can have profound effects on physical health, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature death.
