GWEN GUTHRIE
Born & raised in Newark NJ
The legacy continues with the former back-up singer from Newark who sang alongside Cissy Houston and Aretha Franklin before striking it on her own as a solo vocalist of dance anthems including “Padlock.” Dubbed the “Queen of Paradise Garage” after the popular New York City night club of the 1980s, Gwen Guthrie reigned supreme by redefining mainstream pop music with the bold and brassy hit, “Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But The Rent.” At the time of the release in 1986, the single was considered controversial for its materialistic lyrics: “You’ve got to have a j-o-b if you want to live with me/No romance without finance.” Yet, thirty-seven years later, the song has been sampled by the likes of various dance and hip hop artists worldwide who continue to immortalize this Jersey diva.
