From his early days as a DJ in New Jersey to working with legendary artists and launching his own agency, his journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to “kick it’ with Mark and talk about music, life and the entertainment business. We also discussed Mark’s expertise, career insights, and changes in the music business over the past several decades giving listeners a unique perspective on the industry. Whether you’re a fan, a professional in the field, or just curious about his journey, this conversation is a must-watch!
The Early Days: A Passion for Music
Born and raised in Hackensack, New Jersey, Mark Green’s love affair with music began in the late 1970s. As a high school DJ, he entertained crowds at local events before stepping into the world of rap after witnessing an MC battle in the Bronx. This exposure to the burgeoning Hip-Hop scene allowed Green to mentor rising stars, including Guy O’Brien, aka Master Gee of The Sugarhill Gang, whose groundbreaking single Rapper’s Delight revolutionized the industry.
Green’s first professional break came through an internship at Sugar Hill Records, home of Hip-Hop’s first mainstream hit. He later transitioned to Hush Productions, where he honed his skills in project management, artist development, and road management, working with major acts like Melba Moore, Freddie Jackson, Dru Hill, Al B. Sure, Grandmaster Flash, and Usher. His keen business acumen caught the attention of Associated Booking Corp, where he played a pivotal role in signing Salt-N-Pepa, Roxanne Shante, Kid & Play, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.
Climbing the Industry Ranks
With a reputation as an industry powerhouse, Green moved on to EMI/Capitol Records, where he served as Director of Marketing and took on roles in radio promotions, jazz, and rap. His contributions earned him accolades such as Promotions Person of the Year (1992), and he further established his legacy by producing and publishing successful tracks, including Remember the First Time for Eric Gable and Midnight Hour for Spice MC.
In 1997, Green took a bold step into independent marketing and promotions consulting. He secured a record deal with Light Year/Warner Brothers for his independent label, with Teena Marie as his first artist. The following year, as a consultant at Northstar Distribution, Green was promoted to General Manager, overseeing distribution for Prince’s independent label, NPG Records, which included artists Chaka Khan and Larry Graham.
The Birth of Celebrity Talent Agency
Armed with decades of industry experience and an unmatched network, Mark Green launched Celebrity Talent Agency, a premier firm that secures talent for tours, festivals, and commercials worldwide. His agency has become a trusted source for booking A-list talent and emerging stars alike, ensuring that the show always goes on.
Beyond his agency, Green continues to influence the industry as the Associate Director/General Manager of Lehman Performing Arts Center and Chairman of Artist Relations for The Hip-Hop Museum (THHM). His ability to navigate the evolving entertainment landscape while nurturing talent makes him a true industry titan.

Publisher’s Note: A few days after my interview with Mark, one of his former clients, singer Angie Stone was killed in auto accident. Mark posted the following on his social media platform:
“Rest in Peace Angie Stone and please pray for her band that was with her during the accident. I am so deeply hurt by this incident. We have been talking daily, as I have been working on her upcoming shows. Angie and I met at Sugarhill in 1979. The photo below was taken when they first arrived from South Carolina, all of us immediately became friends and have always stayed in touch. My condolences to her family and friends, and we ask that you continue to pray for her kids.”
