Mildred Muhammad has been appointed by Governor Wes Moore to serve on the Maryland State Board of Victim Services. This opportunity gives her more “tools” and opportunities to widen her “reach” supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse.  Mildred can use this platform to advocate, introduce and strengthen policies and guidelines that provide resources, protection and healing to those impacted by trauma and abuse. I know Mildred Muhammad and this appointment is consistent with her values and what she believes is her responsibility to help other and to model the appropriate behavior when it comes to educating and supporting those in need.

Mildred Muhammad took time to be interviewed by Moderator Gary Johnson and Thought Brothers hosts Bill Spivey, Carlos Prillman and Christopher C.J. Johnson to talk about domestic violence and abuse.  The focus of the interview was preventing domestic violence and abuse and the intricacies of innocent and well-meaning behavior that blames and jeopardizes the safety of victims of domestic violence, more commonly known as “victim blaming.”

Victim blaming occurs when the community blames the victim for the behavior of the abuser. Abusers are co-workers, family members, friends and people in leadership positions.

When a victim, regardless of the gender, speaks up, their life is in danger!  Not just from the abuser, but from those associated with the abuser. For example, family, friends and colleagues will try to convince the victim that the abuser is not a bad person! They will try to encourage the victim to give the abuser another chance. They will make excuses for the abuser. They will use scare tactics to force the victim to change their story. They will remind the victim of all the accomplishments the abuser has achieved and explain how these abusive “allegations” will ruin their life.

They will run to the abuser to get them to change for the sake of all involved. They won’t ask the victim, “How can I help?” They won’t ask the victim, “Are you okay?” They won’t encourage the victim to contact the domestic violence hotline.  They won’t say, “if you need help, just let me know.” They won’t help the victim.

Remember, when you “take up for” or defend the abuser, you automatically take the side of the abuser and you put the life of the victim in danger!
