He Paved the Way for Black Actors in Film and That Legacy Lives on Today

Sidney Poitier, the first Black performer to win the Academy Award for best actor, for “Lilies of the Field,” is dead at the age of 94.

In 1967, Poitier appeared in three of Hollywood’s top-grossing films:

  1. “In the Heat of Night”
  2. “To Sir, With Love”
  3. “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”
